- Firstly, we have studied WISDOM's applicability to the problem of optimizing clean water networks by attempting to optimize, in real time, pumping schedules and service reservoir levels so as to reduce energy consumption.
- Secondly, we have examined how WISDOM can enable the application of data driven modelling techniques to water network data, specific focus in our trial was predicting the occurrence of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in waste water networks.
- Finally, along with conducting the largest roll out of smart meters in Wales we are also researching consumer behaviour, and developing a range of innovative feedback mechanisms designed to improve on the six monthly feedback UK water users currently receive. This will enable us to determine how water consumers in the UK respond to feedback regarding their water usage and how feedback can be used to motivate them to achieve water savings.
Italy: In Italy pilots have focused on how the WISDOM system can enable both localisaton of leakage within a water network and the detection of contamination during the process of water abstraction.
- Results of lab based trials from our innovate leakage localisation approach utilising vibration sensing.
- Results of a study into the implementation of adaptive pricing in the UK.
- Demonstration of a detailed semantic model of the water value chain, including instantations of this model for our pilot sites

In June 2016 Dr Tom Beach, WISDOM Technical Coordinator, will represent the project at the Leading Edge Conference in Jerez Spain. This conference is devoted to innovation in the field of water technology. The aims of this conference are to improve the instruments for water management, and widen their scope - with a focus on integrating urban water systems and river basins.
Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW) is always looking at ways to save customers money and imbed innovation into the business. As part of the WISDOM project funded through the European 7th Framework Programme DCWW have come together with ARAD Water Metering Group under the direction of UK Director Simon Ogden and The City of Cardiff Council to implement SMART Metering. As part of this ARAD sent their signal specialist (Moti Reuben) from their headquarters in Israel to help survey the Cardiff Pilot Area for the best signal setup.

The Training Rig in Glascoed, North Wales, has been used by the WISDOM team from Welsh Water and Imperial College London to help undertake research into Leakage Detection as part of the WISDOM project.
The research is using the rig to install sensors onto a simulated network, to test whether the innovative sensor nodes can identify and accurately locate the leaks themselves, rather than the sensor sending the data to a server, for a leak to then be identified.
The advantages of this are that it would cut down on the communication between sensors and servers and it would allow for greater precision in leak identification. If you would like to know more about this area of the WISDOM project, please contact the WISDOM team on firstname.lastname@example.org.
In May 2016 Dr Tom Beach, WISDOM Technical Coordinator, is an invited speaker at the WWT Wales Water Conference. He will present the WISDOM project, and its current innovation, to over a hundred delegates at Wales' flagship water research event.
The second SIG meeting took place in London on the 25th November 2015. The WISDOM consortium would like to thank warmly its SIG members having participated for their high quality feedback.
This workshop focused on collecting constructive feedback on aspects such as:
- WISDOM modelling of the water value chain,
- WISDOM interfaces,
- Evaluation of experimentations in WISDOM pilot sites, …
The day started with a brief presentation / recap of what WISDOM is: both an ICT system and a series of scenarios and pilot experimentations to prove its relevance.
Then, four dedicated sessions took place on four ongoing tasks:
- (T5.1) The SIG members discussed and commented on the set of KPIs, developed for each pilot site to determine the success of experimentations, with information on duration of monitoring, baseline and targets. This has enabled the Consortium to enrich and refine these KPIs. SIG members also gave feedback on the WISDOM validation process and timing of monitoring process, noting that a 3- to 5-year experimentation would have been necessary to really allow for confidence in the results of the experimentations.
- (T3.2) The SIG members helped orient the use of results on trustworthiness of sensor data, for example by indicating that having a degree of accuracy to qualify the data is already an improvement, and that even not so accurate information is an improvement on the usual current situation,
- (T2.2) SIG members discussed completion and accuracy of the three families of entities and relationships modelled in the WISDOM ontology: physical artefacts, social entities, and sensor artefacts. Feedback was collected detailing several suggested additional classes within each part of the model, which will be given full consideration for the final version of D2.2. The high level assumptions and choices of the ontology were validated and no feedback was received that WISDOM should change the approach.
- (T2.5) SIG members helped identify the key issues linked to the visualisation interfaces. In particular, the SIG ICT and behaviour change experts alerted the Consortium on the fact that: the decisions about frequency of metering have implications on what type of information can be displayed; and achieving behaviour change in residential consumers is a high-quality problem.

We are at the end of the first year of the WISDOM project, we would like to share and summarize the main public results achieved during this first year involving all the project partners.
D1.1: Stakeholder Oriented Sociotechnical and Business Requirement Capture
The deliverable presents the current progress of the WISDOM project's stakeholder orientated requirements capture process. The document describes the pilot studies involved in the WISDOM project. It outlines the requirements capture methodology that has guided how we have performed our stakeholder oriented socio-technical and business requirements capture:
- Water value chain and the stakeholders and processes involved.
- Analysis of current pilot technology, key performance indicators and the requirements analysis that has been conducted.
- Definition of wisdom scenarios.
The figure below shows the conceptual map of the outlined scenarios with their possible overlap and their grouping into 3 categories from a high level perspective in terms of goals, shared methodology and scope.
D1.2 Domestic, Corporate and City water systems and components integration strategy
The deliverable presents the WISDOM projects work towards establishing the WISDOM Domestic, Corporate and City Water System Integration Strategy. The performed study describes the necessary steps needed to develop the WISDOM integration strategy that will integrate the entire water value chain with the developed WISDOM software.
The integration strategy outlined in this document is drawn from three processes:
- Description of the integration strategies used on each pilot at the beginning of the project.
- Analysis of the state of the art of design, simulation and management techniques for water network systems including algorithms, methodologies, numerical method and benchmarks.
- Presentation of the preliminary WISDOM integration strategy categorized in 6 stages: sensing strategy, local communication, field Entities, global communication, WISDOM Core, communication with end users.
D1.3 Software Requirement Specification
The deliverable presents the results of the WISDOM requirements elicitation process focusing on the scenarios that were defined as part of D1.1.
The following study findings represent the first key step in designing the WISDOM system:
- Outlines the methodology used to elicit the requirements.
- Presents the results of implementing this methodology.
- Identifies the differing user roles that may utilise the functionality of the WISDOM system.
- Identifies the WISDOM business services, which are the entities within the WISDOM system which will provide the required functionality to the end users.
- Shows our current progress towards identification the end-users of the WISDOM system and the impact of governance requirements on the WISDOM system.
- Describes the WISDOM high level architecture, which has been drawn from the requirements and the WISDOM description of work
D2.1 WISDOM software and hardware detailed system design
This report presents a first design of the WISDOM system. Drawing on the scenarios and business service specification developed as part of WP1, it describes system use cases for these business services and uses this information as a basis for deriving functional requirements for the system architecture. Based on these requirements a system architecture is described in the form of required system functions, their interfaces and underlying information models. The specification also captures interactions between the system components and details a high level description of the APIs offered across the identified interfaces. The document will serve a basis for guiding the overall system development efforts in WP2 and the integration of analytics components developed in WP3.
D4.1 Shared district water stakeholders' vision document
The deliverable reports the common understanding of the overall aims and objectives of the WISDOM Project. This document gives a description of the Water Value Chain and its key component processes, and identifies the main issues and inefficiencies that the WISDOM Project will seek to investigate and address. The deliverable provides an overview of the operational water system amongst the European member states, developing an understanding of the different stakeholders that could be interested or could benefit from the WISDOM outcomes. The deliverable also focuses on the end users of the Water Value Chain by analysing the results of the surveys conducted to establish current use patterns as well as attitudes.
D6.3 Special Interest Group
This deliverable presents the set-up of the Special Interest Group and the definition of the framework and key operating modalities for its involvement. The Special Interest Group is made of eleven core members covering seven nationalities, representing the potential beneficiaries of the WISDOM solution, i.e. one water consumer, four water network operators, two external parties and including two organizations with expertise on water management and two ICT solution providers. Seven additional organizations have been selected for a further enlargement of the SIG.

The project partners, D'Appolonia S.p.A., Provincia della Spezia e Società Acquedotti Tirreni S.p.A., have promoted an event dedicated to the sustainable water resources and the WISDOM case that will be held in La Spezia Monday 25th of January from 09.45 am.
As a member of the FP7 ICT water project Cluster (ICT4Water) WISDOM will participate at the Annual Cluster Meeting that will be held in Brussels on the 19th March 2015. The meeting will be devoted to the following topics: gaps and concrete actions for R&D in the area of ICT and water management, interoperability and standardization, cost/benefit estimates of problems and solutions, synergies between the proposed solutions and with other related sectors and mapping of on-going policies.
City of Cardiff Council with assistance from Cardiff University and Provincia della Spezia carried out an initial investigation on people's attitude towards water conservation and how they pay their bills and interact with the water company.
In Cardiff, a section of the annual resident questionnaire "Ask Cardiff Survey" was dedicated to water management and sent out to a number of residents. 2750 people completed this section with 575 advising that they would be happy to be contacted again regarding the project.
Here is an example of one of the questions that was asked as part of the "Ask Cardiff" general survey.
Following these results a more in depth questionnaire was distributed in Italy and Cardiff asking residents for further details on their water usage and how they interacted with the water company. The details were Results were obtained from 500 people in Italy and 200 people in Cardiff. Some of the initial feedback has offered a real insight into how differently water is managed in 2 separate countries. Further work in the project will look at how different the water models are for different European Countries.

The WISDOM Consortium will attend on the 18th March 2015 at the ICT for Water Working Workshop organized by the European Commission – DG ConNECT. The Workshop will bring together the FP7 ICT water projects funded projects, the Horizon 2020 Water4a projects and officials from the EC and EASME. The Workshop will be focused on a) the update of the ICT water Roadmap, b) Key Performance Indicators identification on social, economic and environmental aspects, c) Data use and sharing.
Ettore Antonelli (SAT - Società Acquedotti Tirreni SpA) said "I have attended the Conference "Protection of water systems from malicious and accidental events" in the framework of trade fair H2O 2014 (www.accadueo.com) held in Bologna from 22nd to 24th of October.
During this conference it was discussed how to defend the water resource from potential voluntary pollution (terroristic actions) or from accidental pollutant agents (deriving from factories, waste processing, residues and waste etc.). The Italian Ministry of Health has established, together with the European Union, to develop a manual of good practice for the protection of aqueduct and surrounding areas, including prevention and protection from possible contamination.
Ettore continued "I found similarities with what we are studying in WISDOM" .
The protection of groundwater is a priority and it will be studied in Wisdom project trying to prevent pollution or environmental damage, especially in areas such as Italy where the wells field are not easily replicable.
The Conference speakers showed a risk assessment matrix that relates the severity of the damage and the probability of the damage.
With regard to the aqueducts optimization and all actions to be implemented on the SAT pipeline selected as one of WISDOM pilots, I have found some similarities with other European projects, in particular with ‘ICEWATER PROJECT' that, as WISDOM, want to decrease environmental impact by virtuous behaviors.
Now, ICEWATER PROJECT is studying the positive effects on the control of the pressure in the pipeline.
The possibility of dividing a pipeline in sectors with a specific pressure which can vary by the use of controlled valves and inverters, and also the study of the nocturnal pressures allows to:
- Reduce energy consumption
- Reduce stress of pipes and the number of losses
- Increase the service to the user
- Reduce the environmental costs in terms of energy and repair costs
In WISDOM, we are studying how to reduce energy consumption by using advanced ICT systems for the management of flows and pressures, and I think that can be fully integrated with these other studies.
Water IDEAS will take place from the 22nd to 24th October 2014 in Bologna, Italy. It will include Technical Sessions, Workshops and other events. Water IDEAS 2014 is intended to present and discuss the latest developments, strategies, techniques and applications of international best practices in Innovative Water Networks Management.
Ms Elenia Duce (D'Appolonia) will represent WISDOM project.
The 11th International Conference on Hydroinformatics (HIC) will take place in New York, USA, from the 17th to the 21st August, 2014. Main focus of the conference is Informatics and the Environment: Data and Model Integration in a Heterogeneous Hydro World. Conference themes are:
- Advances in Physically-based Modelling Methods,
- Data-driven Modelling, Soft Computing and Model Optimization,
- Real-Time Control and Decision Support Systems,
- Knowledge and Data Management and Models Interoperability.
The Water Distribution System Analysis (WDSA) Conference will take place in Bari, Italy, from the 14th to the 17th July, 2014. Main focus of the conference is on water distribution:
- Water distribution network modeling;
- Smart demand metering, assessment, forecasting and management;
- Asset management and performance modeling;
- Real time monitoring, modeling and control of water systems.
- Analyse initial requirements derived from the WISDOM use cases
- Agree on common high level architecture and terminology
- Detail identified architecture components and their interactions
A technical meeting took place on 12th and 13th June, 2014. During this meeting, the partners of the project worked on requirements capture methodology and first results for Italian (La Spezia) and Welsh (Cardiff) pilots were presented. First ideas on key scenarios for optimization through the WISDOM solution have been discussed. The meeting ended with tour of Welsh Water Site.
